Good golly, my boys can sew!

Photobucket

The obsession, I mean, tradition continues. My boys were itching to sew and I told them we could make some doll pillows. I had planned to let them use some metal darning needles to hand sew but the darning needles required way too much force to poke through the fabric. I abandoned that plan for the sewing machine and instantly the boys went from excited to ecstatic. Apparently sewing machines are power tools too.

They picked out their fabric, I cut out the pillows and drew on a stitching line. My oldest pressed on the pedal and guided the fabric through the machine for his pillow (top right), while my younger son had trouble pressing my largish pedal so I pressed while he guided the fabric. They snipped threads, turned them right side out and stuffed the pillows with fabric scraps. I let them each pick out a tag and I sewed the opening shut. My younger son's pillow is on the bottom and the top left is my sample pillow which now belongs to the baby.

Can you tell they were proud?

Oh yes, very proud. I only had to remind him once that you don't point at the needle while the machine is moving.

The pillows were put to use right away.

And just like their momma, their creative process is quite messy. Thankfully momma is a stickler about picking up the sewing area. I've already been informed they are planning their next sewing project. Something about pouches.
